Roger Creagh-Osborne for South-East Cornwall

FOUR GREENS FOR CORNWALL

The Cornish Green Party announced today that Roger Creagh-Osborne would be standing as The Green Party candidate for South East Cornwall in the forthcoming General Election

Roger is well know locally for his campaigning on transport issues, especially through Rail User Groups,  and his involvement in bringing the Transition Town movement to SE Cornwall through Saltash Environmental Action. He has lived in the area since 1985 and his three daughters attended the excellent local schools and left to go to universities. He is a member of Landulph Parish Council since 2007, and currently works at the University of Plymouth.

Roger said: "I am deeply touched by the number of people who have told me that they are desperate for the Greens to stand so that they can cast a vote for a real alternative - I am persuaded by the strong feelings of people I have spoken with from all walks of life across SE Cornwall that we really must provide an opportunity for electors to vote for what they, and I, believe in.

"I believe in the potential for a viable future on our beautiful planet, and a society built on equality and natural justice. These are the core values of the Green Party and a vote for any party offering a "recovery" to old-school economic growth based madness is a truly wasted vote.

"I believe I can be an effective representative for all the people of SE Cornwall. My father was in the Navy, my second father in agriculture, I have enjoyed a career spanning all levels from manual work to senior board positions and I feel I have experience and empathy to be able to put something worthwhile back into the community.

"Undoubtably we face really tough challenges over the next 10 years as we grapple with the effects of resource depletion and pollution of our world. We can fix these things, but it requires a radically different approach and the Greens are the only group offering a viable alternative to an impossible pursuit of business as usual. People are hungry for a change, and we can offer a real alternative.

"Vote for what you believe in, and it can come true."

Roger was with Ricky Knight on the SW Green Party list for the Euro elections, and stood for Cornwall Council in 2009 for St.Germans & Landulph Division where he polled 22% of the vote.

In the Euro election last year in Cornwall the Greens came fourth and beating MK and Labour into fifth and sixth places.

Ricky said "I am delighted that Roger will be standing for the Cornish Greens, he was tireless in his support of our campaign last year where we came within a whisker of success, and I know he is an excellent candidate who will make a stunning representative for the people of SE Cornwall as their MP"

This means that the Greens will be standing in four of the six Cornish constituencies - up from one in 2005. Roger is joining Ian Wright for Truro & Falmouth, Euan McPhee for Camborne & Redruth, and Tim Andrewes for the St.Ives constituency.

Speaking from the Green Party Spring National Conference, where he is representing Cornwall, Tim Andrewes said "I am delighted that Roger is able to stand. As Caroline Lucas said in her speech today "We don't want to win seats in Westminster to sit impotently on the back benches. We're going to Westminster to make a difference, To open the door for all those we represent. To hold the Government and Parliament to account.To show that you can stick to your principles and still get things done."

Tim added "The energy here at conference is amazing - all across the country people are waking up to the fact that only the Greens really work for jobs, against cuts in services, and for the protection of the NHS and social justice. In Cornwall too, we can now offer something different to the same old parties."

Roger concluded "Green politics is about much more than 'just' the environment - to fix our environmental problems we also have to fix our economic and social problems with a radical new approach. That is why we stress the importance of fairness and resilience at a national as well as a local level. Green politics is about consensus, not confrontation, and I believe that by moving to this more mature approach we can offer a great future for everyone."
