Dear Western Morning News, Whilst Mr Milton accuses me of being sanctimonious for having the temerity to criticise BP for its part in the devastation of a precious ecosystem (WMN 03.07.10.), he seems to entirely miss the point that it is from the environment that all our wealth and resources come and that, the more we trash it, the more precarious the position of the human race, and of all other species, becomes.

Dear Western Morning News,
I am amazed that Dr Doy can bring himself to describe BP as a 'great company' (WMN 18th June) when it has been responsible for the greatest man-made environmental disaster ever. Sure it is good at extracting oil from from increasingly remote and difficult places. Sadly, it is totally lacking in a contingency plans when things go badly wrong. The consequences of mistakes in this industry, like the nuclear industry, are so catastrophic that human error simply cannot be acceptable. Dr Doy's complacency about the industry's 'mistakes' is worrying, to say the least.

Dear Editor,
Our Cornish Lib Dem MP’s have let us down.
I was disappointed by our Liberal Democrats MP’s reaction to the budget (West Briton 24/06/10). To describe the government’s action as a ‘step forward’ that will lead to a ‘fairer economy’ is a significant let down to ordinary people. This is particularly the case in Cornwall, which as we know is one of the poorest areas in Western Europe. The budget also failed to say anything about how we could develop a greener, fairer economic strategy away from greedy ‘boom and bust ‘ economics all three major parties clearly agree on. The ‘ostrich position’ was also clearly adopted in regard to the impending fundamental twin risks of energy crisis and climate change- just as if they do not exist. Still as long as the wealthy, the media, the markets and big business are happy-does it really matter?

Below are the results for the four constituencies where we stood. I would like to start by offering my sincere thanks to those who stood by their principles and were not paniced by all the media pressure about the need for a clear result, the "dangers" of a representative (hung) parliament, the dangers of letting the Tories in or the need to get rid of Gordon.
Those of you who stuck with us and voted for what you believe in can stand proud in the knowledge that at least your preference was clear. For the rest of you, those who said 'you would like to vote for us, but...' then you have only yourselves to blame for the consequences. Your message was confused and is being interpreted in all sorts of different ways by different interest groups as the horse trading between nearly identical power hungry failed political philosophies continues.
Outside a storm is raging as Mother Earth starts to wreak her vengeance on us all and the seeds of destruction inherent in our 19th Century capitalist system burst into inevitable bloom and decay closes in.
We may get another chance to stabilise the ship of fools on which we find ourselves - the news from Brighton is encouraging - Greens CAN win even under our corrupt and discredited electoral system and in the face of massive structural bias towards the status quo.
We certainly do not have time to wait for a 2013 Cornwall election to maybe get a few sane voices into local Government here and then to build a platform for subsequent electoral success into Westminster. We do need to find new ways of getting the Green message embedded into our lives - one of the first things you should do now, if you have not already is JOIN US. We need to get together and collectively work out a way forward, and we need you, dear reader, to be part of this process.
Joining only costs £2.60 a month - do it now online by following this link.
In the meantime here are our local results:
| St.Ives |
Tim Andrewes |
1308 |
2.8% |
| Camborn & Redruth |
Euan McPhee |
581 |
1.4% |
| Truro & Falmouth |
Ian Wright |
858 |
1.8% |
| South East Cornwall |
Roger Creagh-Osborne |
826 |
1.7% |
These are pretty much in line with other results across the region - in seats where Greens hadn't stood before we got around 1.6%, and where we had stood in 2005 we were squeezed down about 1% by people tactically voting because they thought they would influence the national result - you fools!
Just remember next time - vote for what you believe in.

A Green Manifesto for Cornwall
These are the headline points from our Green Manifesto for Cornwall 2010
-
More power in local hands: with health and economic regeneration controlled by the local authority, more services devolved to town and parish level, and Cornish senators sent to a directly elected second chamber at Westminster.

Monday 19th April 2010
 |
The Green Party today launched a radical election manifesto for Cornwall, with commitments to revitalise the economy, protect public services and safeguard the environment.
|
The Party only contested one seat at the last General Election, but this year it is fielding four candidates: Tim Andrewes in St Ives, Euan McPhee in Camborne & Redruth, Ian Wright in Truro & Falmouth, and Roger Creagh-Osborne in South East Cornwall. The increase in candidates is an indication of the Party’s rise in support: at last year’s European Elections, the Party overtook Labour in Cornwall and the South West and polled more votes than Mebyon Kernow in Cornwall.

Press Release
Helston Election Battle in the International Spotlight
 |
Tim Andrewes, the Green Party’s parliamentary candidate for the St Ives constituency, was surprised to be interviewed by a Spanish journalist while campaigning on the streets of Helston last weekend.
Inigo Gurruchaga, who is the London-based correspondent for the Spanish newspaper group El Correo, was on the last leg of a journey from John O’Groats to Lands End, during which he has been reporting on local constituency election campaigns. He watched Tim and other members of his team as they handed out leaflets and posters on Coinagehall Street and talked to members of the public.
