The Green political voice for Cornwall, not imposing Westminster on Cornwall

GREENS ACTIVE LOCALLY

The Green Party in Cornwall is fielding four candidates in this election.  Party members are also active in their local communities - serving on town and parish councils and, also, active in local organisations such as transition towns and climate-friendly communities.  The Green Party ethos is that government should be as near to the people as possible and decision making should be bottom-up, not top-down.  In Cornwall they support residents' representation on Local Community Networks and believe that Cornwall Council's activities need to be open and transparent, as well as responsive to local opinion.

West Briton letter from Lindsay Southcombe

Dear West Briton,

Cornwall, like the rest of the country and, indeed, the planet faces some formidable challenges in the next few years - we are not out of recession, we have a housing crisis, we face resource depletion and, most importantly, we must urgently deal with climate change.  It does not fill me with confidence when our unitary councillors seem to spend a good deal of their time and energy on in-fighting and the blame game (West Briton letters 4th and 11th March).  Thankfully, I have political allegiance to neither the Conservatives nor the Liberal Democrats - if I did I would find their behaviour embarrassing.  As it is, given that the bulk of Cornwall councillors are drawn from their ranks, I should like them to stop their petty squabbling over who was right and wrong regarding the finances of the changeover to unitary status and start listening to and supporting the people of Cornwall, many of whom are working hard to secure a future for our lovely county that does not involve developers, major retailers and concreting over as much of the countryside as possible. It is not acceptable that decisions are taken along party lines - Cornwall is not a political football to be kicked around by these people.

Welcome support for Pubs

Press release 23rd March 2010

PUBS AT THE HEART OF COMMUNITY

Green Party election candidates in Cornwall welcome the Government's recently announced package of reforms to support local pubs - including allowing tied houses to buy local ales rather than tying them to contracts with pub companies, allowing them greater flexibilty to diversify by adding shops and post office services and enabling local communities to purchase their local pub, should it come on the market.

"Local pubs are at the heart of our communities and provide a lot more than a place to have a pint", said Ian Wright, candidate for Truro and Falmouth.  "They are places for people to socialise, to have meetings, to make friends.  They often support other activities, such as cricket teams or charity fund raising".

Tim Andrewes Organic Farm Visit

Fresh Local Food on the Menu during Organic Farm Visit

Tim with Mr.Jones

Tim Andrewes, the Green Party’s parliamentary candidate for the St Ives constituency, has visited a local farm as part of his campaign to highlight local food issues.

Mr Andrewes visited Trevelyan Farm near Rosudgeon and spoke with local farmer Tim Jones about the role of farming in a strong local economy and the importance of farm shops. Vegetables are grown on the farm using organic techniques, and there is also a farm shop selling homegrown produce, as well as fruit and vegetables from other farms in West Cornwall.

Walking and Cycling

Letter from Green Councillor Lindsay Southcombe
published in Western Morning News 4th March

Lindsay Southcombe

Dear Western Morning News,

You appear to have a somewhat ambivalent opinion of walking.  You understandably express concern that a Royal Society of Arts study reveals that some middle-class parents have concerns about taking their children on country walks, in case they get muddy, tired or lost (WMN 23.02.10).

This is, indeed, concerning given that we have rising levels of childhood obesity and may be raising a generation who will have reduced ability to assess risk and negotiate their environs.  Recent studies have also shown that outdoor play boosts a young child's brain development and gives them a better sense of well-being and confidence.

Roger CO on Newquay Airport

Letter to the Editor of the Cornish Guardian from Roger Creagh-Osborne

Congratulations to Kevin Lavery on seeing the light over Newquay Airport

Dear Sir

Could I offer my congratulations to the Chief Executive of Cornwall Council, Kevin Lavery on his recent 'Road to Damascus' moment with regard to the prospects for Newquay Airport.  To remind readers, he said in a briefing "The original business plan was over-confident. The airport will always remain a small regional facility and on its own will probably never make a profit."

Quite a climb down from the hyperbole of the flawed draft masterplan published little over a year ago. As predicted by Bob Egerton and the Groundswell report on the airport at that time,  passenger numbers have declined by over 20% and there is no evidence of any net economic benefit to Cornwall; rather the reverse.

Hopefully Mr Lavery is now getting ready for the next step of his volte face and preparing to admit that the millions of pounds of our money that continues to be poured into the airport has been entirely wasted, and he will announce that council taxpayer support for the airport will now be withdrawn.

Ian Wright on the need for affordable housing

Letter to the Editor of the West Briton from Ian Wright

Cornwall faces an Exodus of our young people unless something is done about unaffordable housing.

I totally support Kate Tregunna’s letter to the West Briton (House prices remain out of reach of average earners; WB 18/2/2010) House prices in Cornwall are nothing short of scandalous, and are totally unaffordable for many people living here, particularly the young and those who have to get by on the minimum wage.
Housing development in Cornwall must focus on the needs to the local population . Too many developments aim at people who already own their own homes, and/ or those moving down to Cornwall. Meanwhile too many local people have to pay high rents for substandard housing and /or cannot afford to get on to the housing ladder in the first place.
